The Downies’ StoryFor three-quarters of a century, Downies has been a powerful force in numismatics, and a prominent part of the Australian landscape. A family company with a proud history and a bright future, Downies has worked tirelessly for 75 years to establish a reputation as Australia’s leading coin professionals. The beginning of a young man’s dream
Emerging from the darkest days of the Great Depression, Downies was the realisation of the lofty ambitions of a young man with a big dream. Phil Downie was barely sixteen years old when he founded the Palmerston North Stamp Company in 1932, but even then, he demonstrated the particular determination that would see Downies become the leading player in Australian collectables – the nation’s largest numismatic company. One of the pioneers of the fl edgling Australian collector market, Phil Downie instigated the Australasian Stamp Dealers Association. This was the catalyst for a worldwide uniformity in the field of philatelics.
Expansion and progression
Since that time, we have progressed to become Australia’s number one, with a sweeping range of professional services aimed to satisfy all areas of the market. Downies Australian Coin Auctions was established in 1963, making it the oldest numismatic auction house in Australia. A tally of 295 consecutive auctions since that time has forged a record for professional and expert service that is second to none.
Enriched by a new breed of enthusiastic numismatists, the 1970s saw the emergence of a new era. After completion of an Economics degree at Monash University and several years in the finance sector, Phil’s son Ken joined the company, representing the next generation of Australian numismatics. Playing a vital role as the company took on new challenges to continue expansion and progression, Ken was in the perfect position to take over from his father when Phil retired in 1985, concluding a lifetime of devoted service to the industry. Ken has followed in the footsteps of his father, leading the way in establishing the Australasian Numismatic Dealers Association, Australia’s major numismatic trade organisation. The next generation
